Portfolio Example & Artist Statement

My kachina carvings are in the classification of the traditional style, meaning that there is no modern equipment or utensils used in the making of my carvings. The main material used is the cottonwood root. This is shaped and formed into a kachina doll using only a pocket knife and a wood file. The paints used on the kachinas are all natural. They are used from natural minerals and pigments that are collected locally on the reservation. The carvings are an exact replica of the kachina you would see on the Hopi reservation. Its kilt and traditional clothing are painted directly onto the doll. Depending on what the kachina wears, actual textiles will be used to dress the kachina when needed. For the headdress, feathers of different birds, such as parrot, duck and others are used. Other materials that are used are corn husks, various branches such as cedar.
