The two-tone etched hand crafted Santa Clara Pueblo pottery is created the traditional way. First collecting the clay materials from the Santa Clara mountains. Sifting the clay and ash to prepare for the mixing process. All pottery is hand made with the coiling method. Once made we let sit to dry then we can prepare for polishing. Using another red clay we sifted the pottery is then coated to began polishing. Using stones passed down to me the pottery is then polished by hand with the stones. After polishing the pottery, it is then ready to be fired outside. Using fire wood and manure the pottery becomes black and is fired completely. After the firing process the main work on the pottery is then ready for etching the designs. After the pot is finished if needed I will sometimes inlay a stone on the water serpents eye. Turquoise, opal, coral, and kingman turquoise are the stones i like to work with.
