My beautiful and spiritual Hopi Tawas (Dawas) represent the sun and life on Mother Earth. I began making my Tawas first by cutting, sanding, drilling the wooden center pieces and painting the Hopi Sun Face with turquoise, red, yellow gold, black and white with acrylic paints. The Hopi Tawa with a circular shape symbolizes Mother Earth. Each circular weaving expresses a connection to my Hopi culture. I incorporate the Hopi traditional belt, woven in red, black and green and the traditional red and white shoulder cape as part of the design. The turquoise dots represents a traditional Hopi squash blossom. The landscape appears in earth tone colors, with green for plants. The white dots are for rain coming down from the blue and purple blends of sky and clouds, often dazzling with the colors of the rainbow. The "peak" patterns and colors depict the mountains of my homeland are a part of my designs with white eagle feathers. Tawas are a representation of all living things on Earth.
