My Hopi Tawas are spiritual mandalas representing the sun and life on earth. The sun (Tawa) face is a wooden centerpiece that is cut, sanded, drilled and hand painted with the colors of the corn grown on Hopi (yellow, blue, red & white). The wooden dowels are cut, sanded and painted to complete the frames to be woven. I hand weave the Tawa with rainbow and earthtone colors using various types of yarn. My designs represent green for plants; earthtone for mountains & peaks; blue for sky; white for clouds; colors for sunrays & rainbows; turquoise for water; white & black for eagle feathers; purples for peace in nature; black, green, white & red for the hopi traditional belt and cape worn during ceremonies. Each weaving expresses a connection to my Hopi culture.
