I carve in the contemporary and traditional style of katsina dolls. With both styles, I use cottonwood root for the figures. In my contemporary style I use various knives, carving tools, and power tools such as a foredom with various bits. I also use a detail wood burner occasionally. I add color and finish with oil paints and wood stain. Occasionally my contemporary pieces are carved as one piece with nothing added. I will also add bases made from various wood burls if needed. As for my traditional style I use mainly knives, carving tools, files, chisels and handsaws. I use kaolin clan for a base coat. I add color with various natural pigment and mineral paints. Most of my paints are collected myself with some traded for with other pueblos. I also use natural material such as, leather, rawhide, horse hair, shells, stones, hand spun local wool, and feathers of various birds (not on the MTBA). Feathers include partridge, duck, grouse, pheasant, peacock and parrot feathers.
