Portfolio Example & Artist Statement
Clifford Fragua

I create my stone sculptures with the use of traditional stone carving practices and methods which includes the use of hand tools, power tools, and pneumatic tools. The scale of my work ranges from small table top sizes to larger than life size. I approach my work with the use of the subtractive and additive process, meaning I carve the stone using the direct carving method, which is carving directly into the stone, sometimes without a preconceived idea. Another method is the lamination technique by combining various stones with the use of stone epoxy and steel pins. A third method, I incorporate in my sculpture, is stone assemblage, with the use of steel pins and stone epoxy. Generally, assemblages incorporates both the additive and subtractive process, as well as the lamination method to create scenarios or dioramas. I embellish my work with shell, turquoise, macaw feathers and inlay work as well as stone or shell heishi.
