I have been a quill artist for the past 10 years , I learned this traditional craft from Cheryl Simon , a fellow MiKmaq artist . All the materials used in my quill work like Birch bark , sweet grass and porcupine quills are harvested by me . I dye the porcupine quills myself . First I draw my design on the paper, then I punch holes in the birch bark and then I insert the quill to form the final pieces. My designs are inspired by the nature on Prince Edward Island . I harvest sweet grass on the reserve on Lenox island where it can be found in the swampy areas . I harvest the birch also on the same reserve. The quills come from the neighboring provinces of Nova Scotia or New Brunswick as we don’t have porcupines on our island.
