As a Potter, I integrate traditional and contemporary methods, working with both naturally sourced clay from my traditional territory of Unamaki (Cape Breton) and commercial earthenware. My creative approach involves hand building techniques like coiling and slabbing. I fire my traditional pieces outdoors as my ancestors did and my commercial clay is bisque-fired in a kiln and then smoke fired outside with seaweed, sawdust and fir tips which allows the smoke to talk through the vessel. I achieve a subtle shine on each piece by burnishing it with a stone before firing. To finish off the pieces I will add elements such as sweetgrass, that i harvest with my family in Mi'kmak'i (traditional Mi'kmaq territory) and or black ash basketry. My artistic journey embodies the richness of indigenous heritage and my deep connection to the land.
