Portfolio Example & Materials Statement
The Late Loren Phillips

Mr. Phillips used acrylic paint, wood staining, x-acto knives, and wood burning on cottonwood root. All the kachinas he produced were traditional Hopi style.

A message from SWAIA Staff (8/16/2025):

Loren Phillips (Hopi) — born May 1, 1942 — was a Vietnam Army Veteran, retired bricklayer, and master Kachina carver. More than that, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and son.

His influence can be seen in the new generation of Hopi Kachina carvers who continue his legacy here at Market.

Loren’s life was dedicated to doing what he loved, and his art will carry his memory forward.
