I am interested in the value systems that different cultures put upon materials and techniques. My work combines materials and techniques valuable by Native standards with jewelry materials and techniques precious by non-Native standards. By doing this my work presents aesthetic and environmental questions, specifically, what is more important/beautiful/valuable: the intergenerational knowledge and clean environment required to harvest, process and create using traditional Native knowledge or the human and environmental resources required to obtain the materials in 'fine jewelry'. My narrative pieces are motivated by my spiritual identity which is informed by being Kiowa. These works tell Kiowa creation stories as well as familial ones. The techniques and materials I use include Porcupine hair and quill work, 22k gold, diamonds, smoked braintanned hide, precious stones, pavé setting, bezel setting, fabrication, lost wax casting and other fine jewelry techniques.
