Portfolio Example & Artist Statement

The materials used were silk rayon velvet to be beaded on, a thin layer of cotton batting for the filling, then a stiff stabilizer with cotton fabric was attached to form the back of the projects. Either silk or cotton bias tape or ribbon was attached and glass seed beads were used in the rope stitch to attach the front to the back of the pieces. I beaded directly on the velvet fabric using our traditional raised Tuscarora/Iroquois technique of beading. The leaf stitch was used to bead the leaves and and stems were beaded in the rope style. The birds nest has a style of its own to bead flower buds. The pieces were beaded together using the whip stitch and then the rope stitch next to it. Attached was a strap for the bags and beaded fringe on the bottom of the bags using #8 glass beads and on the picture frame i incorporated the wampum beads. Wampum beads were used at the beginning of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.Only glass seed beads were used along with sequins/Austrian crystals.
