Jerolyn Honwytewa

I am a Hopi Woman from the village of Mishungnovi. I am a Hopi Sifter Basket maker as well as a Hopi Silversmith. The first art I was introduced to was the traditional sifter basket. My late grandmother (So'oh) was my mentor as well as my inspiration to keep our traditional ways going. The Hopi Sifter basket is made from the yucca plant. My artwork is a mix of modern and traditional materials. I have been making Hopi Sifter baskets since I was 10 yrs old. My introduction to Hopi overlay jewelry making was in my teens. I became a student to my father in 2015. I now make Hopi overlay jewelry with sterling silver materials. My art consists of traditional symbols, unique to Hopi as well as symbols unique to Hopi Womanhood in general. My inspiration comes from the Women and Men who had a role in teaching me our traditional ways.
