I'm and antler carver which is a traditional medium used by our ancestors. I employ a variety of deer species antler including moose, whitetail, elk, fallow, and caribou. To work the material I use power tools, hand-sanding with sandpaper, and metal files. To add color I use either stove polish, or leather dyes. Artist statement: My work is an expression of Hodinöhsö:ni’ life today, showing where we come from, where we are today, and where we are going. My practice often involves social justice dialogue, and I highlight Indigenous people’s strengths and celebrate our resiliency. I expand a traditional media practice through techniques and aesthetics in the effort to to inspire others to take up this dying art. My work in the revitalization of antler carving also involves hands-on teaching of others. I use use my work as a conduit to honor, raise up, and amplify, Hodinöhsö:ni’ women as they continue to reclaim their spaces in today’s world.
