Portfolio Example & Artist Statement

Materials=: Carving knives, Sandpaper, Acrylic water color paint, Temperaturized Wood burner, Linseed Oil, and Cottonwood Root. The Carvings are made from a one piece carving technique. I begin the wood carving by drawing the figure on the piece of wood focusing on the movement of the Body and Feet. Then I start carving the areas that I don’t need with carving knives careful to use every bit of wood I can. At this stage I am just trying to make the basic shape of the figure. I then start carving the features on the carving such as the feathers, head area, feet, and hands. As the carving takes shape it comes to a point I can start the detail work such as feathers, feet, and hands. Next is wood burning. Wood burning is done to make lines which helps in painting the carving. Wood burning will bring out the look and texture of the feathers in the carving. Last is painting which brings the carving to life. Blending the paint with dark and light colors brings the carving to a shaded look.
