Pottery made from traditional clay mined in Acoma, that’s soaked, dried and ground. I also add recycled ground pottery sherds to my clay. Larger pots are made using the coiling method, using wooden or gourd made tools to work out clay and shape. Paints are hematite rocks mixed with wild spinach, as well as red and orange sands that are soaked and strained for pigments. White slip is also mined, soaked and strained, which is used to polish pots with a smooth polishing stone. All materials used are natural and of the earth. Pots are painted using yucca that’s chewed and trimmed to desired size. Firing is done using cow manure.
