Portfolio Example & Artist Statement

I am a second generation traditional and contemporary jeweler following in the footsteps of my late father Richard Begay. I currently work with Sterling Silver and natural and high grade stones in my lapidary inlay such as: turquoise, Mediterranean coral, lapis, pink coral, sugilite, and black jet. I believe in the Dine’ creation stories of our Dine’ people and incorporate it into the beautiful overlay designs and stonework which then becomes a unique piece of artwork. Each piece of artwork I create holds a prayer, a song, and a blessing. This way of thinking was instilled into me by father to acknowledge the sacredness and respect of our craft. When you think of all aspects of our culture, you can feel it in the metal itself that came from the earth as well as the many stones such as the turquoise. It becomes a part of your artistic mind which will inspire your style of work. Most of all, my creations are unique designs with multicolored stones that depicts the Dine’ way of life.
